1. Start with the deliverable: DWG, DXF or PDF?

The three formats do not solve the same communication problem. DWG and DXF keep the result in a CAD drawing workflow, while PDF is useful when the drawing should be reviewed or issued as a fixed sheet. Decide what the recipient needs before selecting views or arranging a page.

You do not have to treat those outputs as competitors. A composed PDF can be the review copy while a DWG or DXF remains the editable drawing. The important distinction is that PDF is optional when a sheet is composed; it is not the only possible output.

Practical rule

Ask two questions: “Will someone continue editing this drawing?” and “Does the recipient need a fixed sheet?” The answers determine whether you need CAD output, PDF, or both.

2. Prepare a clear SketchUp selection

Mash Exporter works from SketchUp groups and components. That makes selection the boundary of the drawing: include the objects that belong together and leave unrelated model content outside the selection. The extension can process several selected objects, so a deliverable can represent one component, an assembly or a purposeful set.

Before exporting, decide whether the drawing should communicate one object in isolation or the relationship among several objects. A furniture component may need individual views; a built-in assembly may need a combined selection. The best selection is the smallest one that still communicates the construction or coordination question.

Also verify the model units and tolerance you intend to use. Both are configurable parts of the output workflow. They should match the level of precision expected in the drawing rather than being chosen after the file is already issued.

3. Choose views that answer a drawing question

The extension provides six standard orthographic views: Top, Bottom, Front, Back, Left and Right. It also provides four isometric views and an assembly or exploded view. More views are not automatically better. Each view should explain something the others do not.

Use orthographic views for measurable relationships

Front, side and top views are the usual foundation for understanding overall size, alignment and face-to-face relationships. Bottom and back views are useful when hardware, recesses or construction details would otherwise remain hidden. Choose only the directions that contain information.

Use isometric views for orientation

An isometric view helps a reader connect the orthographic drawings to the 3D object. Because four orientations are available, choose the one that exposes the most relevant faces rather than adding every orientation by default.

Use an exploded view to explain an assembly

The exploded option is useful when the relationship among selected parts matters. Treat it as an explanatory view: it complements measurable orthographic drawings instead of replacing them.

4. Compose the sheet deliberately

Sheet composition is optional, but it is the stage where separate views become a readable issue. Mash Exporter lets you configure paper size and orientation, then fit views with individual scales or use one common scale.

Individual scaling helps use the available page area efficiently. A common scale is preferable when the reader must compare the relative size of several objects or views. The correct choice depends on the drawing purpose, not on a universal default.

5. Match the CAD processing mode to the job

Mash Exporter includes distinct CAD output paths for speed, DWG output and hidden-line removal. Their commercial names are less important than the decision they represent: do you need the quickest geometry output, a requested DWG deliverable, or additional processing to remove hidden lines?

Hidden-line processing can make a drawing easier to read, while a faster output path can be useful for iteration. Choose the mode according to the issue stage. A quick internal check and a final drawing do not always need the same processing choice.

Do not assume the format proves the drawing

A file extension tells you how the drawing was delivered, not whether the selected objects, views, scale and visible geometry are correct. Inspect the exported result before sending it.

6. Check the export before issuing it

A short review prevents most downstream confusion. Open the CAD file or PDF and compare it with the intended SketchUp selection. The check should focus on communication rather than only whether the file opens.
